A 23,253-acre fire burning in northern New Mexico has crossed over into southeast Colorado early Saturday morning, burning 9,160 acres of Las Animas and Baca counties.

The Stateline Fire, which is burning in three states, started Thursday morning on private property in New Mexico, according to New Mexico State Forestry. It is currently 40 percent contained, said Wendy Mason, the forestry’s wildfire prevention and communications coordinators.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation. The area is remote and there are no immediate threats to structures Sunday, she said.

More than 100 firefighters from multiple agencies were working against the blaze, which is being fueled by piñon, juniper, oak and grass, according to the New Mexico forestry department. The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control has sent a firefighting aircraft and multiple engines.

Satellite imagery from the National Weather Service showed the burn scar of the fire extending from Colorado, across New Mexico and into Oklahoma, where only 10 acres are ablaze. The smoke plume went south down to New Mexico.

NWS said their satellites picked up a hotspot from the fire Friday and Saturday. Cloud coverage was blocking the view Sunday.
