A special unit within the Fulton County District Attorney’s office will decide whether to formally charge Broncos defensive end Adam Gotsis with rape or any other crime, officials say.
Atlanta police arrested Gotsis Wednesday for investigation of allegations he raped a woman in Georgia in 2013 while he was a member of the Georgia Tech football team.
The Crimes Against Women and Children unit will determine whether to file formal criminal charges against Gotsis and if so what they will be, Chris Hopper, spokesperson for District Attorney Paul Howard Jr., said on Tuesday.
The unit includes a deputy district attorney, 10 prosecutors, nine investigators and four paralegals. The team handles child and adult sexual assault cases from Fulton County.
“After the investigation is complete, we will have more to release,” Hopper said.
Gotsis, of Lone Tree, surrendered Wednesday at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta on a charge of strong-arm or physical force rape, according to a Atlanta police incident report. He was released after he posted a $50,000 bond, said Tracy Flanagan, spokeswoman for the Fulton County Jail.
Gotsis is accused of overcoming the will of a 25-year-old woman on March 9, 2013, in Atlanta.
Gotsis’ attorney Sara Becker, of Atlanta, has previously said Gotsis is innocent. The Denver Broncos released a statement saying the organization takes such allegations very seriously.
