The Mets said Wednesday that the outfielder has been assigned to start the season at Binghamton of the Eastern League. The Rumble Ponies open their season at home on April 5 against Portland.
The 30-year-old Tebow, a former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL quarterback, split last season between a pair of Class A teams, Columbia, South Carolina, and St. Lucie. He hit .226 with eight homers and 52 RBIs in 126 games.
Tebow, who is not on the Mets’ 40-man major league roster, was hampered during spring training by a left ankle sprain.
