A man attempting suicide in the Larimer County jail injured three deputies during a fight Friday morning and has been charged with second-degree assault.

Anthony John Warren Stansberry, 27, had been booked into the jail on Thursday for resisting arrest, obstruction, criminal mischief and escape. He was being held without a bond in a maximum security area of the jail, according a news release from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.

On Friday morning, deputies found Stansberry trying to hang himself with material from a mattress, the sheriff said. The mattress material was removed, and Stansberry was moved to another area for closer observation.

He then began banging his head on a metal frame and attempting to cut his wrists. As deputies tried to restrain Stansberry, he spat at them and tried to bite them, the news release said. Deputies placed a padded helmet on his head for safety, but he worked free of restraints and removed the helmet.

He again started to bang his head and threatened to hurt deputies who tried to stop him. As deputies worked again to restrain him, Stansberry bit a deputy’s hand, the news release said.

Stansberry was secured and evaluated by medical staff. He calmed down about two hours after the episode began, the news release said.

Three deputies were treated and released at a local hospital for cuts, bruises, the bite and a knee injury.
