When the annual  gets underway on the campus next week, a freshly minted board of trustees will be presiding.

George Washington graduate, and former Denver Nugget and NBA All Star Chauncey Billups joined former Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter and local marketing and food sales industry veteran Jamie Gronowski last month as the newest members elected to serve on the northwest Denver Jesuit school’s board of trustees.

Billups, whose list of basketball accomplishments include being named MVP of the 2004 NBA Finals and seeing his jersey retired by the University of Colorado, joined with longtime Regis men’s basketball coach Lonnie Porter in 2006 to boost Porter’s existing leadership academy at the university. The two-and-a-half-week program, which begins June 11 this year, provides academic and leadership training to disadvantaged Denver kids, according to Regis.

“This is a big shot in the arm for Regis.” university president Father John Fitzgibbons of Billups, Ritter and Gronowski being named trustees. “All three men’s commitment to our university reflects the fact that Regis is rising and flourishing in its 141st year, and the years ahead are bright with promise.”
