The Boulder County Sheriff's Office and St. Vrain Valley School District will host two meetings this week to discuss storing AR-15 rifles in gun safes at Niwot High School. The sheriff's office also wants to install the safes at Lyons Middle/Senior High School.

In an effort to expedite the response to a potential school shooting in Lyons or Niwot, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office wants to store AR-15 rifles in both schools.

The guns will be moved from school resource officers’ cars, where they are now kept, to safes in the school offices that could be unlocked only with a deputy’s fingerprint.

Parents with St. Vrain Valley School District will have opportunities Tuesday and Thursday to meet with St. Vrain Superintendent Don Haddad and Robert Sullenberger, division chief for the sheriff’s office.

Sullenberger said it takes about 15 minutes for law enforcement to get to Lyons Middle/Senior and about 10 minutes to arrive at Niwot High School. Having the guns in the buildings will provide a safer method for a deputy to neutralize a school shooter, he said.
