The Loveland man accused of recklessly abandoning his infant son, causing his death, pleaded guilty Monday to child abuse charges.

Gabriel Navarrete, 20 at the time of his arrest last December, appeared before 8th Judicial District Judge Stephen Howard on Monday to plead guilty to child abuse causing death, a Class 2 felony.

As part of the plea deal, the courts will drop two felony drug charges against Navarrete.

Loveland police arrested Navarrete in December 2017 after emergency crews were dispatched to an apartment in the 900 block of North Douglas Avenue on a report of a child not breathing. The child, Navarrete’s 8-month-old son, was rushed to the hospital and declared dead Dec. 28.

Since then, , including 700 pages of discovery evidence, a bail bond decrease and a delayed autopsy report for the infant.
