Firefighters who have held the Buffalo fire in check for two days have begun mopping up the wildfire even as a troubling weather forecast raises the possibility that dry lightning could trigger new spot fires, authorities say.

But for the most part, officers were upbeat Thursday after 150 firefighters kept the blaze within 91 acres and achieved 20 percent containment.

The fire erupted Tuesday two miles from Silverthorne and triggered 1,400 evacuations.

“The team and resources who have been managing the Buffalo Fire have done an excellent job at ensuring public and firefighter safety,” said Jay Esperance, Incident Commander of the Rocky Mountain Incident Management Blue Team.
