Denver authorities have identified the 29-year-old man who was fatally shot Wednesday evening in a gun fight on Colfax Avenue with a police officer.

Camell Nelson died of a gunshot wound, according to the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.

Investigators say Nelson was shot by one of two Denver police bicycle patrol officers who were responding to reports of a robbery about 8 p.m. Wednesday at the 7-Eleven at the intersection of East Colfax Avenue and Pennsylvania Street.

Nelson also fired at the officers during the encounter, striking one in the leg. The wounded officer  — whose injuries were described as “serious” — was treated at a hospital and released.

Two other people — bystanders — had minor injuries from the shooting.

The names of the officers involved have not been released.
