Michael Porter Jr. signs rookie contract with Denver Nuggets

Porter, the 14th overall pick in the draft, was the top-rated high school recruit in the nation in 2017 before missing most of his lone season at Missouri following back surgery.

Michael Porter Jr. has signed his multi-year rookie contract with the , the team said in a news release Tuesday afternoon. Though exact terms of the deal were not disclosed, the rookie scale for the 14th overall pick is $2.4 million in 2018-19.

Porter was the top-rated high school recruit in the nation in 2017 before missing most of his lone season at Missouri following back surgery. Porter will not play in summer league, which begins later this week in Las Vegas, but has been working with trainers and shooting by himself during and after practices this week.

“We are going to be extremely patient (with Porter’s health),” Nuggets president of basketball operations Tim Connelly said following the draft. “We’re going to take the long view for everything we do with him. But he was there (for us to pick at No. 14) because there were concerns about the health of his back.”

Denver also drafted Kentucky forward Jarred Vanderbilt and UCLA center Thomas Welsh in the second round of this year’s draft.

The Nuggets are coming off a season in which they finished 46-36 and missed the playoffs by one game.
