A 16-year-old boy has died after he was shot on the Fourth of July in Fort Collins, police confirmed.

The boy’s identity will be released by the Larimer County coroner’s office, according to a Fort Collins police news release.

Police determined a suspect in the fatal shooting was another 16-year-old boy who is already in custody on an unrelated matter. The victim and the suspect knew each other, the news release said.

The shooting happened in the early evening of July 4 in the 800 Block of Merganser Drive.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a teen victim with serious injuries who was taken to a hospital and later died from his injuries.

Police have presented their investigation to the Larimer County district attorney’s office, which will release pending criminal charges.

Other details were not available.
