Getting your player ready...

Chad Kelly saw the cameras waiting for him, and like most every assignment he had that day at training camp, the Broncos’ third-string quarterback sprinted to the next stage. Helmet still on. Ready to go.

And suddenly, it was as if No. 6 was actually wearing No. 4, because the media scrum rushed to grab a soundbite like a stampede. Camera men stood on stools in the last row. I squeezed in the side. Then, finally, Kelly removed his helmet, and in a very serious tone, he laid out the expectations.

  • “I’m excited to get my feet under myself and really condition myself to play a full game.”
  • “We have to be on the same page if we want to excel in this game.”
  • “Even in the classroom, you have to get better. Itap not just the football field.”

Kelly, 24, enters his first healthy NFL training camp to learn behind a respected veteran. He even mirrors Case Keenum in stature. Who knows if he’ll pan out, but in a QB-crazy town like Denver, there will be plenty of Broncos-faithful cheering him on at training camp. The cameras will be watching closely, too.

Day 3 is in the books. Plenty more to go.

“This is my job, this is what I care about,” Kelly said. “I’m in this game to be the best I can be every single day. With that being said, you’ve got to have fun. Thatap what the game’s about, because not everybody can be in this position. So, I’m taking every day with a lot of heart and try to perfect my craft.”
