The Westminster apartment fire that killed two people and injured 14 others was intentionally set, investigators said Tuesday, but they declined to release details about the fire’s cause or any suspects.
Local officials will continue the investigation as an arson and homicide case.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives National Response Team presented its preliminary report to the Westminster Police and Fire Department officials Tuesday.
“This has been a collaborative effort,” said NRT team leader Dixon Robin. “ATF appreciates the hard work and professionalism of the Westminster Police and Fire Departments in processing this complex fire scene and conducting the subsequent follow-up investigation.”
The deadly fire burned Building E in the Westbury Apartments in the 1500 block of West 115th Avenue on July 22. It started a little after 2 a.m. and quickly spread through more than half of the building’s 69 units, forcing several residents to jump from second- and third-story balconies.
Because of the age of the building — its occupation certificate was issued in 1974 — it did not have fire safety sprinklers. New construction requires sprinklers that are in compliance with the International Fire Code.
The Adams County Coroner’s Office identified the two women killed as 41-year-old Lea Hamel and 58-year-old Margaret Kelly.
The property was released to management at Westbury Apartments as of noon Tuesday. Residents with questions about getting their belongings are asked to contact property management at 303-452-0032.
Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the Westminster Police Department at 303-658-4360.
