Firefighters in Colorado Springs battled a house fire Tuesday night in the foothills in which a roof collapsed.

Residents got out of the home safely and no firefighters were injured, according to early reports on Twitter from the Colorado Springs Fire Department. The first Tweet was posted at 6:24 p.m.

The fire broke out at 7965 Heartland Way, southwest of the U.S. Air Force Academy campus. Flames and heavy smoke streamed from the attic of the home as firefighters arrived. The fire gutted the roof structure.

When the roof collapsed, firefighters pulled back into a defensive position for safety reasons, according to fire command. Hilly terrain in the area also caused concerns for firefighters.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
