Firefighters from multiple agencies rescued an elusive dog that had been trapped underneath her Centennial home since Monday morning.
Shouts of joy were heard as Littleton firefighters freed the dog and reunited her with anxious owners and family.
“We’re not quite sure why she got in there,” South Metro Fire Rescue spokesperson Kim Spuhler said. “If she was chasing a bunny or scared of a sound.”
What they do know is Luna, an 8-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, couldn’t seem to find her way back out.
The 1970s home is located near South Colorado Boulevard and East Dry Creek Road, Spuhler said. Multiple agencies — including South Metro, Littleton Fire and Centennial Animal Control — had to contend with an addition to the residence that created “secret spaces” underneath the home.
“We came back today and we brought in heavy rescue to work through some cement to get her out,” Spuhler said.
Great teamwork between Littleton and South Metro Firefighters! Luna has been safely rescued and reunited with her family.

The team cut through parts of the deck, but hadn’t cut into the foundation, Spuhler said.
Rescue workers in the home’s basement listened for Luna’s barks to try to give their counterparts a better idea of where to dig. A crew made visual contact with Luna around 3 p.m. They got her out about 90 minutes later.
