A Weld County man was sentenced this week to 52 years behind bars for a brutal attack he carried out on a woman nearly two years ago in Hudson.

A jury in May found John Cordova, 43, guilty of two counts of first-degree assault for stabbing a woman 23 times before beating her in the back of the head and neck with a shovel.

Weld County Chief District Attorney Benjamin Whitney said it was a miracle the victim survived. Since the Sept. 25, 2016, attack, nerve damage has limited the use of the right side of her body, and she is learning again to speak.

“The life she had before this crime no longer exists for her,” Whitney said. “Her goals, aspirations or anything in life that she strived for have been robbed from her.”

A Weld County judge handed down Cordova’s sentence Tuesday.
