The remains found in the area of Left Hand Reservoir by Brainard Lake in Boulder County on Sept. 3 have been identified as Ernest Macaulay of Boulder.

An anthropological examination of Macaulay’s remains will be completed, and the cause and manner of his death are pending further investigation, according to the Boulder County Coroner.

Two hikers found a skull Monday afternoon near the reservoir. They left the area to call police, but were unable to guide investigators to the exact spot. The next day investigators from the sheriff’s office, the Boulder County Coroner’s Office and Front Range Rescue Dogs were able to find the skull as well as other additional remains.
