As first responders from across the nation head to the East Coast to help battle Hurricane Florence, Colorado volunteers from a Longmont-based rescue organization are driving an 82-foot tractor trailer loaded with equipment to assist in rescuing pets, livestock and wildlife.

Around 30 volunteers for the nonprofit Code 3 Associates are traveling toward the Carolinas from Colorado, Missouri, New York and Texas, among other states, according to Jim Boller, director of disaster services and training for the organization.

Hurricane Florence, a Category 1 storm, made landfall around 7:15 a.m. on Friday near Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina. Winds there reached 92 mph on Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

More than a half-million homes and businesses in North Carolina were without power on Friday and more than 2,000 flights have been canceled through Saturday, CBS News reported. At least five deaths had been reported.

Four Colorado volunteers left Code 3 Associates headquarters on Skyway Drive early Wednesday in the Big Animal Rescue Truck, or BART, which is designed as a mobile command center.
