State flags were lowered to half-staff Monday in honor of a Fort Carson U.S. Army sergeant who was killed in Afghanistan earlier this month.

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Diobanjo S. Sanagustin was killed Sept. 4 in the Parwan Province of Afghanistan in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Gov. John Hickenlooper ordered flags lowered on all public buildings across Colorado.

Sanagustin, 32, was assigned to B Company, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson in southern Colorado.

Sanagustin, who was from National City, California, joined the Army in May 2007. He deployed to Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan during his 11-year Army career, according to the Army Times.

Sanagustin is survived by his wife, son and parents.
