The Rockies are in the hunt for their second consecutive playoff appearance. Here’s a look at how they can end up in the postseason:
Win the National League West
The Rockies can secure a playoff spot — and their first division pennant in franchise history — by outright winning the National League West, which they have never done.
What if they tie with the Dodgers?
A one-game tiebreaker would take place Monday, Oct. 1. The game would take place in Los Angeles since the Dodgers won the head-to-head series this season (12-7).

| Team | W | L | PCT | GB |
| Colorado Rockies | 91 | 71 | .562 | – |
| Los Angeles Dodgers | 91 | 71 | .562 | – |
Earn a wild-card spot
For the Rockies to secure one of the two wild-card spots, they would have to lose the division to the Dodgers and end up with one of the top records among non-division-winning NL teams.
Tiebreakers for home-field advantage in wild-card or play-in game
- St. Louis Cardinals: St. Louis won the head-to-head matchups with a 5-2 edge over Colorado.
- Milwaukee Brewers: Milwaukee won the head-to-head matchups with a 5-2 edge over Colorado.
- Chicago Cubs: Chicago and Colorado tied 3-3. In the second tiebreaker (highest winning percentage in intradivision games), Colorado would win with a 41-35 record compared to Chicago, which could be — at best — 38-38).
What if there’s a two-team tie for the first wild-card spot?
The team with the better regular season head-to-head record would get home-field advantage in the wild-card game. The Rockies would lose all tie-breakers, to the Cardinals (2-5), Brewers (2-5) and Cubs (3-3).
What if there’s a two-team tie for the second wild-card spot?
The teams would play Oct. 1 for the final spot. The team with the better head-to-head record would get home-field advantage. The wild-card game would then be played Oct. 3.
What if there’s a three-team tie for the first wild-card spot?
Each of the three teams (A, B and C) would choose a designation (for a ). Team B and team C would play on Oct. 1. The winner faces team A in the wild-card game Oct. 3.
What if there’s a three-team tie for the second wild-card spot?
Just like above, but the winner of the Oct. 1 game faces team A for the second wild-card spot on Oct. 2.
What if there’s a four-way tie (Dodgers, Rockies, Brewers and Cardinals)?
- Oct. 1: The Rockies would travel to Los Angeles to play the Dodgers for the NL West title. The Brewers would play the Cardinals (location TBD) for one wild-card spot.
- Oct. 2: The loser of the Rockies-Dodgers game would face the loser of the Brewers-Cardinals game for the second wild-card spot.
- Oct. 3: NL wild-card game.
