Boulder’s Community Cycles is under contract to purchase a new facility at 2601 Spruce St. The nonprofit plans to move in early 2019 from its longtime space, one it outgrew years ago; new digs will allow for more classes and shop time, said Executive Director Sue Prant, and to bring indoors some offerings that are currently conducted outside, even in the winter.
“Now, we don’t have enough space for more than one thing at a time” in the shop space, which is open to the public to make repairs and take classes, Prant said. “We’re often outdoors with tents, all year-round.”
The Spruce spot will have dedicated classroom and meeting space, as well as “better access and flow.” Community Cycles has been on Wilderness Place since 2007, first in one unit. It later took over three more, but space has been tight for at least five years, Prant said. The organization has been planning a move for three.
It was intended to move into the S’PARK development, but as the project moved along, it became clear the facility wouldn’t work. The surrounding streets didn’t allow for drop-offs of the 3,000-some donated bicycles Community Cycles receives every year.
“The S’PARK people were so good to us, but there’s only so much they can do,” Prant said. “(Developer) Scott Holton asked us what we needed, and I said, ‘Somewhere to go.'”
