A 29-year-old has been arrested for investigation of first-degree assault after he allegedly shot his 78-year-old grandfather in the abdomen, authorities say.

Andrew Ramon Salazar, of Evans, is also being held for investigation of two counts of menacing and third-degree assault.

The grandfather, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition.

Salazar’s grandmother called police and told them that he had shot his grandfather, according to a news release by Francisco Saucedo, spokesman for the Weld County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies learned that an argument broke out between Salazar and a family member at around 7:49 a.m. at a home on the 1700 block of 49th Street.

Salazar went into his grandfather’s bedroom and grabbed a rifle, the news release says. When the grandfather tried to stop Salazar he was shot, the news release says.

Salazar is currently being held in the Weld County Jail.
