An armed man was shot by a sheriff’s deputy on Monday afternoon in Larimer County.

The incident happened after the suspect lead authorities on a long vehicle pursuit, which ended when a deputy bumped the suspect’s vehicle and it ran into a ditch in the area of County Road 66 and NE Frontage Road, north of Wellington, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

The driver, who was armed with a handgun, got out of his vehicle and was shot by a deputy, the release said.

The incident started just before noon when a 911 call was made about a “physical disturbance,” which also involved a firearm, in the Red Feather Lakes area near Dowdy Lake Road. When deputies arrived they were told that the armed suspect was a 25-year-old man who had left the scene.

The suspect returned, failed to comply with deputy’s commands, and drove off in a 2001 Subaru Forester.

The Subaru was later spotted near County Road 74E and U.S. Highway 287 near Livermore, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver kept going. The pursuit ended when a deputy bumped the Subaru and it ran into a ditch.

The suspect was taken to the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland. The lone deputy who fired has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with policy.

The incident remains under investigation. The suspect and deputy involved were not identified.
