On October 6, 1998, University of Wyoming freshman Matthew Shepard was beaten and left to die in a prairie subdivision on the east side of Laramie by two local men. Shepard left the Fireside Lounge earlier that evening with Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson. Shepard, a gay man, was beaten, pistol whipped and robbed before being abandoned by the men. Shepard, 21, died on October 12, 1998 at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado. These images pair scenes in Laramie with portraits of people who were involved with and affected by the incident, as well as members of a younger generation continuing to fight for LGBTQ rights in Wyoming and Colorado.
