Cherry Creek football is headed back to the state championship game, but it didn’t come easy.

The Bruins squeaked past Columbine 10-7 in Friday’s Class 5A semifinal, shutting out previously unbeaten Columbine (12-1) in the second half to clinch their 17th title game trip.

Junior Seamus Henderson ran in a 6-yard touchdown on third and goal with 10:46 left in the game to put Cherry Creek (12-1) ahead for good. The Bruins held on from there, and will now go for their 10th state championship against the winner of Saturday’s semifinal between Grandview (11-1) and Valor Christian (12-0).

Logan DeArment gave Columbine a 7-3 halftime lead with a 3-yard touchdown run with 34 second left in the second quarter, but that was all the offense the Rebels could muster. Cherry Creek’s Mac Willis kicked a 35-yard field goal midway through the second quarter.
