Avalanche honor Humboldt Broncos bus crash survivors, gift sled to local player during game against Stars

Colorado, behind the efforts of the Dawg Nation hockey foundation, tugged at the heartstrings on Saturday night

The Avalanche tugged at the hockey heartstrings during Saturday night’s divisional game against the Stars.

First, the franchise — behind the backing and efforts of the — honored two survivors of the Humboldt Broncos bus crash with a ceremonial puck drop pregame.

Ryan Straschnitski and Jacob Wassermann, who both now play sled hockey due to injuries sustained in the crash earlier this year, received a standing ovation from the Pepsi Center crowd.

Then, midway through the opening period, Colorado and Dawg Nation presented local adaptive player Pierce Grandchamp with a new sled, new equipment and a $5,000 check. Earlier this month, Grandchamp — who plays and coaches for Colorado Sled Hockey — had all his equipment
