Lakewood police were involved in a shooting that left one man dead near 13th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard on Wednesday night.

At about 7:20 p.m., a Lakewood officer on patrol encountered a man who was armed and had fired at least one shot at Mountair Park, Lakewood police spokesman John Romero said. As soon as the officer saw the man fire, he called for backup.

The officer tried to engage the man, but he was not compliant and started walking east, Romero said. The officer followed the man to an area near 13th and Sheridan as other officers converged on the scene. At that point, the man began shooting at the officers, at least one officer returned fire, shooting the man dead, the spokesman added.

Police recovered a gun at the scene, Romero said. No officers were injured, the man was declared dead at the scene.

Police have not found anyone else who suffered a gunshot wound in the area.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Team, made up of several county law enforcement agencies and the district attorney’s office, will investigate the fatal officer-involved shooting.

The man’s identity was not released on Wednesday night.
