The Boulder County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who reportedly shot himself during a traffic stop last week as David Motsinger, 55, of Lyons.

The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a possibly drunk driver near North St. Vrain Road and Apple Valley Road at 7:30 p.m. Friday

A deputy pulled the vehicle over near Second Avenue and Evans Street in Lyons. Officials said Motsinger pulled a handgun and put it to his head and threatened to shoot himself. The deputy tried to negotiate with him, but Motsinger shot himself, officials said.

Motsinger was declared dead on scene.
