University of Colorado leaders have pledged to continue examining stipends and benefits paid to graduate student workers amid changing leadership.
Dean of the Graduate School Ann Schmiesing, who was hired in January 2017, will transition into the role of senior vice provost for academic resource management at the beginning of the new year, but she said the momentum around the issues will continue.
She created a task force in October to examine CU’s pay and benefits as it compares to other institutions in the Association of American Universities, and interim dean Leslie Reynolds will begin serving on the task force in January. Its members are due to deliver recommendations this spring.
“I’m so excited the graduate students are going to have fantastic advocacy,” Schmiesing said of Reynolds. “I know that the dedication and expertise of the graduate school staff is also going to provide continuity in her new role.”
Schmiesing this month also released select results from a survey of graduate students regarding their experiences with mentors and funding. Full results of the survey were not yet made available, pending further analysis, but should be available in the spring.
