State authorities are warning of an “extended closure” of both sides of Interstate 70 in the foothills following a fatal crash on Monday night.

Two people were confirmed killed in the crash, and at least one person was seriously injured, CSP reported. “An eastbound vehicle lost control and crashed with a westbound vehicle. Two lives lost, and another is badly injured,” Colorado State Police tweeted.

The highway could remain closed until at least 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday, according to state police.

The first call came in at 8:24 p.m. The crash happened in the westbound lanes near mile marker 254 and the exit for U.S. 40, CDOT reported. The highway was closed from mile marker 254 to mile marker 256. The only available detour was along the north frontage road, according to CSP Troop 1A.

“If at all possible, try to avoid the area,” said CSP Trooper Josh Lewis.
