A 51-year-old drunk man fell through the ice at the Gross Dam Reservoir in Boulder County on Saturday afternoon and then attempted to escape from rescue workers, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.

About 4:47 p.m., a Denver Water Recreation manager saw a man fall through the ice. The man was able to get out of the water on his own, the sheriff’s office said, before climbing up a steep embankment.

The man was met there by the water manager, “who realized the male was clearly hypothermic and intoxicated,” the release said. The manager offered the man a ride to their station so he could stay warm.

While they were driving, authorities said the man opened the door and jumped out of the moving truck. He started running into the woods. Coal Creek Fire personnel arrived and found the man passed out down a gully. They were able to wake him up and bring him to the command post, before transporting him to Boulder Community Hospital for observation.

There are no charges pending at this time, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff’s office said it was not known if the man was suicidal or having a mental health issue.
