“Black Panther,” that was released less than a year ago, will return to a half-dozen area theaters starting Friday, Feb. 1, for a week of free screenings in honor of Black History Month.
The timing is both savvy and appropriate: Oscar-nominated “Black Panther” showcases a mostly black cast and production team on a scale and budget never seen before in Hollywood. Released nationally on Feb. 16, 2018, “Black Panther” became both a box office juggernaut — earning more than $700,000 million domestically, , making it 2018’s top-earner — and a critical and audience favorite on the way to scoring several historic firsts across the board.
The film was so popular before its release that schools, churches and others rented out theaters so kids and congregation members could see it for free — including in Denver.
“Itap perfect with it coming out during Black History Month, and itap the perfect counter-programming to (President Donald) Trump’s whole (expletive) countries comment about immigrants,” Denver soul singer told The Denver Post just before the film’s theatrical release. She rented out three theaters at metro-area Alamo Drafthouse Cinema locations to screen it. “I’m Haitian-American and my parents migrated here from Haiti, so it really resonates with me.”
While the film has been available on streaming services such as Netflix for several weeks, seeing this 2-hour, 20-minute epic on the big screen is the ideal way to experience it. And Disney, which owns Marvel, certainly has the film’s Oscar nominations and marketing in mind in the lead-up to the Feb. 24 telecast on ABC, adding that the free screenings coincide with a $1.5 million Disney gift to the United Negro College Fund.
Today we are excited to announce will return to the big screen to celebrate from Feb 1-7 at participating AMC theaters. Tickets are free! We will also donate $1.5M to to make the dream of higher education a reality for more students.
