The city of Denver on Wednesday announced that security concerns had forced it to close Bannock Street near the City and County Building.

The city barricaded the downtown street after “security incidents,” according to a news release: Two automobiles have crossed onto the pedestrian plaza in front of the building within the last six weeks.

There’s no indication that either of the drivers meant to cause harm. In a Nov. 15 incident, a driver “pulled their vehicle up onto the plaza, pretty close to the street, got out and walked away,” said police spokesman Doug Schepmman.

“We weren’t able to locate the driver, and it looks the vehicle just got towed.”

In a Jan. 14 incident, the driver parked closer to the building and was charged only with “careless driving.”

The street has been closed from Colfax Avenue to 14th Avenue, a one-block distance, for about a week, according to a city spokesperson.

The closure is temporary, but city officials gave no timeline for reopening.

City crews will “review and implement improved safety enhancements along the street,” according to a news release. Additionally, city officials “will be auditing safety and security at all city facilities and are working to implement enhanced security measures.”
