Two. That’s all he needs to tie the record.
Three to break it.
Forgive me a bit for jumping the gun here, but I don’t think it’s going out on a limb to say Colorado State’s Nico Carvacho will make history tonight and become the Rams’ career leader in rebounds.
Carvacho, college basketball’s leading rebounder at 13 per game, enters tonight’s contest against San Diego State (9 p.m., ESPN2) with 849 career boards, two shy of Pat Durham’s all-time mark that has stood since 1989. Given this is a program that has seen the likes of Pierce Hornung and 7-foot NBA journeyman Jason Smith come through in the past 15 years, it’s hard to believe that record hasn’t been shattered.
Now it will be.
Carvacho is only a junior. By the time his career ends next March, he’ll have well over 1,000 rebounds in his illustrious CSU career, a tenure in green and gold that was almost cut short when he was granted his release this past summer and considered transferring amidst the coaching change.
This season alone, he has 18 double-digit rebounding efforts in 24 tries, including his last seven games (17 rebounds apiece in the most recent losses to Wyoming and Nevada), and twice has secured 20-plus boards (at UNLV and at Long Beach State). Not bad for a soccer player who didn’t start playing basketball until he was 15.
Big Chile is making history tonight.
