The 5 Diamond Bar brand, which was first registered on February 14, 1914, by Janie's great uncle Ed Craig, is still a registered brand to this day and is used on the VanWinkle's cattle.

The couple both owned business outside of the ranch until 2013, when Howard sold his share of an auto shop and 2015, when Janie sold her pizza store. Though they have worked in agriculture for many years, Janie said that starting a business in ag is a difficult battle. When the couple was married, Howard brought 20 sheep to the relationship and Janie brought 20 cows.
