  • Parade of Champions: 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.)

Updates

(10:50 p.m.) That’s all, folks. The state wrestling tournament is officially in the books. It’s been a wild three days at the Pepsi Center, and the final matches of the night delivered. 5A heavyweight Cohlton Schultz of Ponderosa became the third four-time champion of the night with a pin in 52 seconds against Legend’s Colin Lavell. The 5A team title, though, was awarded to Pomona with 166.5 points. Ponderosa came in second with 103.5.

(9:03 p.m.) Another four-timer wins, Segura’s upset bid leads to title. A second four-time state champion was named Saturday night when Greeley Central’s Andrew Alirez (4A 152) pinned Pueblo County’s Trevor Singleton in the second period.

Among the more surprising story lines of the weekend was Regis Jesuit’s Antonio Segura taking the title at 5A 145. Segura upset prior three-time champion Theorius Robison (Pomona) on his path to the finals match where he defeated Joey Joiner (Legacy) in a 2-1 decision.

(7:41 p.m.) Four-time champion crowned, 2A champ caps undefeated season. Pueblo County’s Brendon Garcia (4A 113) handed a 7-3 defeat to Pueblo East’s Xavier Espinoza in the finals to earn his fourth-consecutive state title. Rye’s Michael Atencio was also crowned champion (2A 113) with a 5-1 decision over Wray’s Cade Rockwell. Atencio finished the season with a perfect 35-0 record.

(6:16 p.m.) Almost go-time. The wrestlers have completed their on-mat warmups and the Parade of Champions is nearly underway. Fans are pouring into their seats. So let the fun begin. A quick reminder on format: Each respective weight class will compete simultaneously across four mats between 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A. Wrestlers who placed will be recognized on the podium in between classes. We’ll get started with the 106-pounders at roughly 6:30 p.m.

(2:25 p.m.) Girl power. The podium rounds of state tournament wrestling began with a bang inside the Pepsi Center. Valley’s Angel Rios (3A 106) and Skyview’s Jaslynn Gallegos, both 3A 106-pound wrestlers, became the first girls in history to place at the state wrestling tournament. They each needed one win Saturday to reach the milestone. Rios won her consolation match after Brendan Johnston (The Classical Academy) forfeited on religious and personal principle. Gallegos earned a fall victory against Hunter Fredrickson (Moffat County) in 59 seconds.

Rios placed fourth when Robert Estrada (Weld Central) squeezed by in a 3-2 decision. Gallegos, who also advanced in the first round via Johnston forfeit, got fifth place with a pin of Trevor Torrez (Pagosa Springs) in 53 seconds.
