A gas line break at the Suncor Energy oil refinery in Commerce City caused a hazmat incident on Thursday night with company and county firefighters responding.
The incident happened at about 9:30 p.m. at Suncor, 5400 Brighton Road, according to South Adams County Fire Department.
A vapor cloud was released by the gas line break, the fire department said. Firefighters contained the incident and there was “no hazard to the public,” according to South Adams.
Firefighters remained at the scene late Thursday night. There was no immediate report of injuries or of an explosion.
In March of 2017, malfunctions after a power outage at the plant triggered toxic belches spewing more than 100 pounds of hydrogen sulfide and more than 500 pounds of sulfur dioxide gas into the air, exceeding state air quality limits.
Update on Suncor hazmat situation. As of 10:10pm there was a gas line break at Suncor and Suncor Fire has it contained and under control and no hazard to the public. SACFD will remain on scene and provide assistance. Suncor PIO will be handling media.
