Two malnourished horses have been seized by authorities in El Paso County, and the owner has been cited for animal neglect, according to the sheriff’s office.

On Tuesday deputies executed a search warrant in the 23000 block of McDaniels Road as part of an ongoing animal neglect investigation, according to a news release.

Two horses were found to be malnourished and suffering from a lack of care, the sheriff’s office said.

“One of the horses had severely split front hooves requiring veterinary care,” the release said. The horses were taken to an American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-approved boarding facility.

There were no other animals on the property. The owner, Jessica Mier, has been cited on two misdemeanor counts of animal neglect. She has surrendered the horses to the sheriff’s office, the release said.
