Mullen alum Maverick Handley became the first Colorado player to be selected in the 2019 MLB draft, as the Stanford catcher was taken in the sixth round at No. 168 overall by the Orioles on Tuesday.
Handley hit .293 with five homers for the Cardinal this season, and was a two-time All-Colorado selection while at Mullen. The 5-foot-11, 205-pounder is the 20th Mullen baseball player to be selected in the draft.
Quin Cotton, an outfielder from Grand Canyon, was another local picked on day two. The former All-Colorado selection at Regis Jesuit went No. 234 overall in the eighth round to the Reds after starring for multiple seasons for the Antelopes and winning the 2018 Western Athletic Conference player of the year.
Cotton, originally selected in the 38th round out of high school by the Rockies, is one of 27 Raiders players to be drafted.
