North Metro Fire Rescue District has banned outdoor burning because of high-to-medium fire danger and the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag warning due to hot temperatures, low humidity and high winds for parts of the Western Slope.

North Metro issued the fire ban for Thursday because of high fire danger, according to a tweet.

The Red Flag warning is in force from noon until 9 p.m. on Thursday for lower-elevation locations including Grand Junction, Montrose and Cortez, said Dave Barjenbruch, meteorologist for the NWS in Boulder.

Temperatures will be in the 90s Thursday from west-central Colorado to the southern border of the state, Barjenbruch said.

Humidity levels below 15 percent and wind gusts expected to reach 30 mph to 40 mph are also a major concern, he said.

Grass fires are a particular concern, Barjenbruch said.
