First baseman Yonder Alonso on Tuesday was called up to the Rockies’ main roster, an opportunity for the former all-star to try and regain his 2017 form and provide help for Colorado.
Some veterans were able to breathe new life into their careers with the Rockies, like Mark Reynolds in 2016, Jason Giambi in 2009 and Jamie Moyer in 2012 (the man won two major league games at the age of 49!). Others didn’t do so well (like Reynolds in 2019). Here’s a look at some former stars who struggled in their time in Colorado:
Dale Murphy, outfielder and first baseman: The two-time MVP and multiple all-star, Gold Glover and Silver Slugger finished his career in the Rockies’ inaugural season. He appeared in 26 games, batting just .143. He retired two home runs short of 400 for his career.
Howard Johnson, third baseman, shortstop and outfielder: The two-time all-star signed with the Rockies for the 1994 season after nine years with the Mets. He struggled in Colorado, batting .211 with 10 home runs (seven away from home) and 40 RBIs in 93 games.
Greg Vaughn, outfielder: The four-time all-star was part of the Rockies’ roster for two months in 2003. He batted .189 with three home runs and five RBIs in 22 games.
Steve Finley, outfielder: A five-time Gold Glove winner and two-time all-star, Finley was 42 when he joined the Rockies for his final season in 2007. He batted .181 with one home run and two RBIs in 43 games.
Ryan Howard, first baseman: Howard starred with the Phillies for 13 years earning the rookie of the year award, the MVP and three all-star appearances. After signing with the Rockies in August 2017, he struggled in the minors, batting just .192 with three home runs in 16 games in Albuquerque before being released.
