
The Nuggets waived backup center on Tuesday, clearing one more two-way spot on their roster ahead of September’s training camp, according to a league source.
Welsh, affectionately known as “Big Tom” throughout the organization, spent most of last season in the G-League on his two-way contract. He averaged 10.3 points and 8.1 rebounds throughout the course of 20 games there. He played sparingly for the Nuggets, though was one of the most well-liked players in the locker room.
The Nuggets have previously found NBA talent by utilizing and then converting former two-way guys like and . With Welsh, who averaged just six points and 4.5 rebounds during the Las Vegas Summer League and will now be a free agent, the Nuggets felt there were better options.
The Nuggets’ roster now effectively has one open slot and both two-way spots available, with rookie Bol Bol still yet to be signed.
The Nuggets open their preseason schedule on October 8th in Portland.
