Five takeaways from the Rockies’ 9-3 loss to San Diego on Thursday night:

1. The Rockies’ error-filled defeat leaves them with a 12-29 record since June 21. That .293 winning percentage is the lowest in the National League, and the second-lowest in majors during that span. Only woeful Detroit has been worst (8-34, .190).

2. has proven, once again, that he’s an excellent hitter — he has a .347 average since the all-star break — but he’s been terrible with the glove at first base. His inability to make a routine scoop in the fourth inning led to an error being charged to shortstop . Which begs the question: When will the Rockies find a reliable first baseman who can hit and field?

3. The Rockies had 13 hits Thursday night but were 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

4. Starter Jon Gray gave up two runs in the first inning and said his recent first-inning woes are a “reality check.” He owns a 4.88 first-inning ERA, his worst inning by far.

5. Rockies manager Bud Black is never going to criticize his players publically, but he’s clearly angry and frustrated with how this season has soured.
