The Rockies have not lived up to expectations this season and now find themselves sitting in the cellar in the National League West.
There are a number of things that have gone wrong for this season, including putting too much stock in unproven prospects, bad free-agent signings and lackluster pitching.
We could get into how the Bridich and Co. dropped the ball on not even trying to sign DJ LeMahieau, but we will save that for another day.
The starting pitching has been a black eye this season at 20th and Blake, and it starts with the talent and mindset heading into a game.
In today’s game, the magic number for starters is 100 pitches, the fifth inning or third time through the lineup. Analytics are a part of the game, but are ruining America’s pastime at the same time.
Starters need to get back to going deeper into games and should take some pride in the work they are putting out every fifth day.
The days of being complacent with going five innings need to end. A starting staff should have the mindset of wanting to finish what they started.
Dating back to 2017, Colorado has had two complete game — German Marquez’s one-hitter against the Giants earlier this season, and Tyler Chatwood back in 2017.
What the Rockies need is a bulldog in their starting staff, much like what Hall of Famer Mike Mussina brought to the mound during his 18-year career.
Mussina compiled 57 career complete games and even .
Back in 2006, Mussina wanted to finish a game against the Orioles and told Torre “stay there” as he walked up the dugout steps. Torre stopped in his tracks and Mussina went on the get the complete game win against the O’s.
