High winds and a power outage created safety concerns that prevented Eldora ski area from opening today, according to a post on Eldora’s social media.

“Eldora will not open today, Thursday, March 12, due to high winds, power outages, and safety concerns,” the post reads. “We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for understanding. It may be windy, but the sunrise sure was beautiful.”

“Weather models forecasted winds exceeding 100 miles per hour around midnight last night at Eldora,” Marketing Director Sam Bass said Thursday at 11 a.m. “This is around the same time the resort lost power. Power is still out at the mountain and it remains quite windy, so we closed the mountain for the day. All signs point to a routine power outage somewhere between Nederland, which still has power, and the mountain. We are working with Excel to restore power to the resort and plan to open as scheduled tomorrow at 9 a.m.”
