A woman and four cats died in a house fire early on New Year’s Day, the Denver Fire Department confirmed.

The fire at 3637 E. Mississippi Ave. was called in by a neighbor shortly after 5:30 a.m., said Denver Fire Department spokesman Lt. Robbie Turner.

Firefighters arrived within minutes and began putting out the fire and pulling out a woman inside the home, Turner said.

The woman did not survive, Turner said.
