Two Fountain Police Department officers on Monday shot and wounded a car theft suspect, who police say opened fire during the encounter.
At 7:52 a.m., Fountain police officers with a multi-jurisdictional auto theft task force responded to multiple reports of a stolen vehicle on the 1800 block of East Kiowa Street, Colorado Springs Police Department spokeswoman Natashia Kerr said.
Officers tracked the vehicle to Terrace Road and ordered the driver to get out, Kerr said. The driver jumped from the car and ran into a residential area on High Point Lane with a weapon. When officers attempted to contact the man he shot his gun. One officer returned fire, and the suspect was struck.
The man was taken to a hospital in serious condition. No officers were injured, but the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on routine administrative leave, according to a news release from the Colorado Springs Police Department.
The Colorado Springs Police Department is leading the investigation.
