Denver Mayor Michael Hancock declared a local state of emergency Thursday afternoon as reports of the new coronavirus increase throughout Colorado.

The declaration might make additional emergency resources available to city crews, said Loa Esquilin-Garcia, emergency management spokesperson, in a news release. The declaration expires March 19.

Hancock is also discouraging large gatherings in Denver to prevent the spread of the virus, which causes the respiratory illness COVID-19, Esquilin-Garcia said.

So far nine people in Denver have tested positive for the virus and another 22 people have been quarantined but show no symptoms, Esquilin-Garcia said.
