A Denver wrestling tournament that had been expected to draw 2,500 athletes from around the country this weekend has been postponed, a day after the head of the venue that was to host the event had said it would take place despite concerns about the coronavirus.

Paul Andrews, president and CEO of the National Western Stock Show, which was to host the wrestling tournament at the National Western Complex, said in an email Friday that the event’s promoter had postponed the tournament until a date to be decided in the future.

The Rocky Mountain Nationals wrestling tournament was to have run from Friday to Sunday at the complex.

On Thursday, Andrews had said the tourney would go on despite growing concerns in Colorado and across the nation about the transmission of COVID-19 — the highly contagious respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus — in large crowds.

“I think itap important to get out there that life can’t stop,” Andrews had told The Denver Post. “We’re in a state and a city where economics dictate people’s jobs, so if we stop going to restaurants, we stop going to events, itap going to significantly impact the entire state.”
