The 2020 coronavirus outbreak isn’t the first time a pandemic has hit Colorado. The flu of 1918, also known as the Spanish Flu, hit the state particularly hard. It’s estimated that the 1918 flu killed an estimated 8,000 Coloradans. The poorly named Spanish Flu is thought to have started in , which put the Centennial State near ground zero.
Although it’s important to note that the coronavirus is not a strain of influenza, similar strategies were used to help flight the flu pandemic. Colorado shut down schools and banned events with large numbers of people. has some great audio recordings about how hewspapers were reporting it at the time.
